Grading Policies

The grading scale will be calculated as follows:

Tests 30%
Quizzes 20%
Projects and Lab Reports 30%
Classwork and Participation 10%
Homework 10%

Tests: Most tests are announced at least three or four days ahead of time. Expect a test after each chapter. It is a very good idea to study a little bit every night instead of waiting until the night before the test.

Quizzes: There will be two or more quizzes per quarter. These may or may not be announced. Some may be open notes. Please take thorough notes.

Projects and Lab Reports: These are an important part of Science. You will be provided with rubrics and deadlines for major projects and lab reports. Please follow the instructions and rubrics. Ask questions when confused. The nature of scientific investigation is for you to think about what you are investigating and how you are going to go about it. I will not provide all of the answers since it is important for you to do the investigating and reporting. Unexcused late work will not be given full credit. Missing work will be given zero credit.

Class work and Participation: This category includes coming prepared to class (pencil, book, notebook, and homework), work done in class, and participation in group and lab work. Please participate in class in a positive and constructive manner. We learn by our mistakes. Don’t let the fear of making a mistake keep you from helping your group or from asking questions

Homework: The homework given is not only meaningful but good study practice and will help give you background knowledge for the current lesson. It is also 10% of your grade. That means that if you do not do it, the maximum grade that you will earn is 90%. If you are finding that you are spending more than 15 to 30 minutes per night on Science homework, please have your parent or guardian write a note to let me know so I can adjust your homework load.

Notebooks: Handouts are given frequently. Please use a three ring binder and a hole punch. New entries in notebooks should be dated. Homework should have appropriate titles, dates, textbook pages, and problem numbers.
